Its been a while since I posted about Joe Lee Dunn.

I thought about him after running across this youtube of the 2nd half of MSU’s appearance in the 1998 SEC championship game.

So I Googled, and Joe Lee Dunn is a Defensive Coordinator for McMurry, a soon-to-be D-II college.

Or…maybe he is selling DVDs on collegiate football defensive schemes.

Pearls Before Swine has to be the best comic strip that most people have never heard of. Too bad the Clarion Ledger doesn’t carry it.

Delicious on Firefox 4 April 17, 2011

First off, if you don’t know what delicious is, you should. Delicious is a server that allows bookmark sharing, except that instead of bookmarks, they are really tags.

Huh? Why would you want to share bookmarks? Simple. Bookmark something at home, and with bookmark sharing, you’ll automatically have the bookmark on your home computer. Or your smartphone. Or laptop. Or whatever. See…

Tags? What’s that? OK, the most useless part of bookmarking is the stilly folder structure for saving bookmarks. Because to use any bookmark, you have to remember which folder you put it in. And if you’ve been using a computer and surfing the internet for more than a year or two, you probably have hundreds of bookmarks.

OK, back to tags. Tags are like categories. Say you want to bookmark as site like ESPN’s Dallas Cowboys page: http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys Instead of “bookmarking” it, with delicious you’d “tag” it. A “tag” is like a category and the beauty of it is that you can assign multiple tags to won website. So the aforementioned website, for example, could be tagged as “football”, “nfl”, and “dallascowboys”.

Delicious has no folders, just tags. So if you want to go find that website you don’t have to remember which folder you put it in. Instead, you lookup your tagged (bookmarked) websites by tag name. Since we tagged that site with multiple names, now all you have to do is remember any one of 3 names (football, nfl, or dallascowboys) to lookup that bookmark. There’s no limit to how many tags you can give a website. “3″ was just an example here.

OK, so where am I going with this….

Firefox 4 is out. Its sleek. Its fast. Its better than previous versions. And delicious isn’t officially supported. Dammit.

BUT….an addon is available which allows you to run unsupported addons (like delicious) with Firefox 4. So if you’re like me and you’ve been holding off on FF4 due to lack of delicious support – rejoice! Download the aptly named “Add Ons” add on here and then you can add the “unsupported” delicious addon here. It seems to work just fine in FF4.

Style/ABV

Belgian Strong Dark Ale, 8%

Appearance

Dark brown, thin head that mostly goes away soon

Smell

Just a little malt, mostly what you’d expect from a dark ale

Taste

I had high hopes from this beer, as dark ales are my favorite style. Unfortunately, I felt this beer was merely a dark ale version of Ephemere. Minus the citrus, plus some hoppy/malty ale. Too much carbonation, that bites too much up front. It is heavier bodied than the ultra-lite Ephemere, but less so than I expect from a dark ale. Once again, as the beer warmed, the flavors came out more. And like Ephemere, I think this beer would be best served lightly chilled.

Drinkability

Yep, its just a dark ale version of Ephemere. Not nearly smooth as it should be. Too crisp from carbonation. A forgettable beer that I wouldn’t buy again. Life’s too short not to buy Chimay instead.

Style/ABV

Can’t think of any style that suits this beer, 5.5%

Appearance

Cloudy, golden. Small head that goes away fairly soon.

Smell

The apple on the label clues one in on what to expect on the smell. Smells like a lager with distinct apple tones.

Taste

The apple smell was just a tease. There are only subtle apple flavors in the taste. The up-front taste is quite bitter, and more lemony than apple. This beer is very crisp and light. Carbonation feels heavy with enough up front bite to cover up any savoring of short-lived flavor. There’s little complexity to this light bodied beer. I don’t care for it.

Drinkability

Flavor is light and brief. Too much carbonation gets in the way of flavor. As the beer warmed in the glass, the flavors came out a little more. This beer might be best served lightly chilled.

Overall, I’m unimpressed. And after (if) I finish the next bottle in my sample pack, I won’t drink this one again.

Style/ABV

Belgian Strong Ale, 9%

Appearance

Very dark brown, and by dark I mean coca-cola. Almost purple in color. Absolutely no head. This much was quite a turnoff. I like to see a head on a beer. And I HATE stouts, which are the only other beers I know of as dark in appearance as this one.

Smell

If beer were red wine, this would be it. Smells like a red wine. Full-bodied fruits were apparent.

Taste

Smell was a good predictor of taste. Again, if beer could be red wine, this would be it. If you could imagine red wine with much of the sweetness replaced with malt, this would be it. It has all the maltiness of good ale with subtle fruity tones of a cabernet. Don’t get me wrong – it still tastes and drinks like beer. But it has the fruity subtle complexity of red wine.

Drinkability

Carbonation is just right – not too subtle, not overbearing either. Its drinks smooth enough, but lacks the silky caress of my favorite – Chimay Grande Reserve.

I like the taste and drinkability a lot. I’d like to rank this beer among my favorites, but the complete failure in the appearance department is hard for me to get beyond. I’d drink this again. Maybe in dimly lit bar. LOL

Style/ABV

Tripel, 9%

Appearance

Cloudy golden amber, one-finger head that goes away quickly and leaves some lace. Tiny bubbles constantly materialize from the body and race to the head.

Smell

A little malt and some citrus

Taste

Mild hops followed with an orange-lemon citrus finish. The fruity flavor jumps out and dominates.

Dinkability

Lots of carbonation that delivers smoothly. This beer goes down like silk with a fine prick of the tongue. A citrus flavored, very smooth and easy to drink beer that I would drink again. For my personal taste, it is heavy on citrus and too much tickling from carbonation. That much citrus was really a surprise from a brew that isn’t a Lambic. A very good beer, but not a complete match to my tastes.

UPDATE: I’ve finished the 2nd of 2 bottles in my Unibroue sample back. It seemed a bit less citrusy and more like what you’d expect in a good golden (pale) ale. So my opinion of Unibroue has improved a bit.

But I’m curious about why the beer in this sample pack seems to have such variation from one beer to the next. I’m told the Trois Pistoles that I said seemed totally headless should have had a normal beer head, and may have been flat. Maybe this sample pack has been on the shelf forever? Beats me.

Style/ABV

Scottish Ale, 6.5%

Appearance

Dark ruby red caramel. Small head which quickly goes away and leaves light lacing.

Smell

Smells mostly like a typical ale with slight caramel tones.

Taste

Wet, or slick, on the palate. Delivers an immediate taste of sweet caramel followed by a raisin-like finish. Malty. Carbonation is like. No bitterness at all. Sweet would be the best one-word description of this beer.

Drinkability

Goes down very smooth. Light carbonation doesn’t leave you feeling full. The complex sweetness is inviting. Ales are my favorite style and I’ll be buying more of this one. I’d say its my favorite next to Chimay Grand Ale

A new Rockstar March 30, 2011

A new drink has earned honorable mention status in my realm of energy drinks. Now remember kids, I only consider ~zero calorie energy drinks, as calorie-filled drinks are futile.

Rockstar Recovery has a lot of similarities to lemon flavor Gatorade. They share the same taste. Actually, I prefer this Rockstart to Gatorade for taste. Unlike Gatorade, this Rockstar is mildly sweetened. The sweetners must be artificial, but they are mild nonetheless. Like Gatorade, Rockstar also lacks carbonation, which is a nice change of pace from most energy drinks. Also like Gatorade, this Rockstar drink claims to re-hydrate with electrolytes.

And taste is about where my positive comments end. Like its Rockstar siblings, Rockstar Recovery delivers little in the way of energy. The kick is rather mild, which may be a good thing depending on your mood.

Still, Rockstar Recovery is a nice entry in the overcrowded world of highly carbonated, gasoline-flavored low calorie energy drinks.

If you haven’t seen this, you don’t spend much time on the internet…

My long time friend, the multi-talented Joe M. Turner, made his own version of that commercial..
