Idle Philanthropy June 29, 2006

SETI@Home has been a hallmark of geekdom for years. SETI@Home shareware is a screensaver that utilizes otherwise idle computer time to help researchers look for ET. Millions have people have downloaded this and effectively given Berkley unimaginable computing power to perform their research. Once upon a time, I was a big SETI@Home user.
But did you know SETI@Home’s parent, Berkley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) offers several other volunteer opportunities? Surf over to BOINC and you can download screen savers that will allow you to contribute your idle computer time to cure diseases, unlock physics mysteries, predict weather, and research outer space.
When I get back home to my computer, I think I’ll join the fight against cancer.
