Dark Side Of Oz October 29, 2006

Speaking of things too good to last (cough youtube cough), have a look at Dark Side of Oz before its too late. I’d heard of the amazing synchronicity between Wizard Of Oz and Dark Side Of The Moon many times, but had never actually seen it.

This is required viewing for Pink Floyd fans. Its really amazing.

But is it intentional? Alan Parsons, who produced Dark Side Of The Moon and had control over sound effects and various timing, has denied any connection to Oz.

Hubble announcement coming Tuesday October 27, 2006

The fate of the Hubble telescope has been decided. NASA will make its decision public on Tuesday.  Since Hubble refurb mission astronauts will be part of the press conference, I’m guessing NASA will do the right thing and go take care of Hubble.

In this election year, I can’t see the decision going any other way. If NASA has a holy grail, its certainly Hubble. Next to landing on the moon, I’d venture that Hubble has been NASA’s most popular project.

MSU president to flyover 10/28 pregame October 27, 2006

MSU President and former Air Force pilot and four-star general, Robert “Doc” Foglesong, will perform a flyover for the pregame to this weekend’s contest against Kentucky. As soon as Doc took the reigns at State, it was anticipated that he might do a pregame flyover.

Most like myself were assuming Doc would fly a T-38 trainer from Columbus Air Force Base. Or maybe even an F-16. But Doc will be flying in a 1940’s era biplane as a salute to aviation pioneers.

Cool.

Youtube has gone the way of Napster. It had to happen sooner or later. Most videos on youtube are snippets of copyrighted material, including the clip or two of Jerious Norwood that I’d posted on there.

Today my inbox greeted me with this from youtube:

This is to notify you that we have removed or disabled access to the following material as a result of a third-party notification by National Footbal [sic] League claiming that this material is infringing…

Thanks, No Fun League. I understand your interest in enforcing your copyrights. But poo-pooing on harmless short clips created and enjoyed by fans is just mean. Booooooo!!!! Go spend your time shooting down real criminals that are reselling entire copies of NFL games or pirating the NFL Sunday Ticket.

O Hubble, where art thou? October 26, 2006

The fate of the Hubble Space Telescope is one again in doubt. After having survived a government funding battle, Hubble is up against confidence issues at NASA. The same gang of can-do wizards that put men on the moon are now debating the safety of fixing a satellite.

NASA is considering letting Hubble go the way of Mir because Hubble’s orbit prohibits any space-borne escape plans to the International Space Station. Yeah, you heard it right. NASA is scared to fly space shuttles without a place to hide from danger.

I get it. The Columbia disaster was tragic. So was the Challenger explosion. So was Apollo 1. NASA, you’re in a dangerous business. Take all the precautions you reasonably can, even if it means listening to your engineers and aborting a mission at launch time.

But now you’re saying you might let Hubble die in space? For heaven’s sakes, NASA, what are you thinking? Take a page from the Challenger aftermath, and stop listening to bureaucrats. Get with the program and get Hubble taken care of, OK?

Sincerely,

The World

Absolutely nothing that these eyes can see is more facinating than outer space.

This picture was taken 100 miles from America’s light pollution capital, Los Angeles. (right-click, “view image” to see the whole thing) Almost as amazing is that it was done with about $1,900 of Orion telescope and imaging equipment. Impressive, huh.

And now, a reality check from the great Hubble Telescope. Take a deep breath before clicking here.

Hurt so good October 21, 2006

Your record on the season is 2-5. You got beat by Tulane. You’ve lost 22 straight SEC road games. So when your team plays Georgia in Athens, GA, you’re expecting to lose. In fact, you’d be surprised if you didn’t get blown out.

But with 40 seconds left, you’re down by 3 and you’ve got the ball at your own 19 yard line with no timeouts left. Two plays later, you’re on the Georgia 22 yard line with 12 seconds left. Your QB rolls right, passes…no, he’s hit as he’s throwing and he fumbles the ball. Georgia recovers and wins the game.

OHHHH, that hurts.
