War Of The Worlds September 4, 2007

Labor Day Weekend’s movie selection was War Of The Worlds. I must say I think this is the best of recent history’s batch of cataclysmic disaster movies. Granted, I haven’t seen any 9/11-related movies yet. But among the likes of Independence Day, Armageddon, Deep Impact, etc., this one stands out.
For starters, it is made by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg’s movies always have believable drama with characters that you care about. The characters aren’t blockbuster action heroes. They seem more like real people with real problems that most folks could identify with. Tom Cruise plays a father struggling in his relationships with this children and ex-wife.
And as far out as the storyline is, War Of The Worlds somehow comes off as believable. It gets help from stunningly realistic CGI effects courtesy of George Lucas’ Star Wars spinoff company, Industrial Light & Magic. But the effects aren’t just for the sake of great effects. There’s a certain feasibility in the physical interactions and sci-fi theory that just brings everything together.
If you haven’t seen War Of The Worlds and you’re a fan of aliens inflicting unprecedented wrath on humanity, its definitely worth a rental.
