Mississippi State has a new basketball court.

MSU held an online poll to choose a new court from 3 designs. The Ninja says the vote was close and this one was the winner.

I like it.

One thing I like about the NCAA Basketball Tournament is that is isn’t just the top 65 teams. There are in’s from pretty much every conference, including conference tournament winners. This situation gives rise to Cinderella teams teams like last year’s George Mason or the North Carolina State team that won the championship but wouldn’t have made the tournament had they not won their conference tournament.

But there ought to be more discretion in selecting teams. Exhibit A:

UCLA 70

Mississippi Valley State 29

Come on. Every year a handful of deserving teams are snubbed from the tournament. Surely any of a dozen teams would have fared far better than Valley against UCLA.

(NCAA logo, duly ignored. Suck it, NCAA.)

Georgia Dome shaken by tornado March 15, 2008

A tornado struck downtown Atlanta during last night’s Mississippi State – Alabama SEC tournament basketball game. The tornado occurred during overtime. Overtime happened because Alabama’s Mykal Riley hit a fall-away buzzer-beater circus 3-point shot to send the game into overtime. If that hadn’t happened, there might have been thousands of people outside the GA Dome when the tornado struck.

The Georgia Dome apparently did not take a direct hit. But, as I watched the game on live TV, the Georgia Dome’s cable-strung canvas rooftop rippled, shook, and caused catwalks, lights, and the scoreboard to sway above thousands of people inside the Dome.

Here’s an article on the structure. The canvas roof weighs just 68 pounds.

I’m not sure putting a canvas roof over a football stadium is a real good idea, especially if scoreboards and things are going to sway in the wind.

Hey Ole Miss fan, you just got jacked up.

Make that Jamont’d up. That play would make Magic Johnson proud.

Twenty point loss. Ouch.

Mississippi State’s Jarvis Varnado is a shot-blocking machine. He is on pace to easily shatter MSU’s shot block record. He’ll probably break the SEC record too. As of today, his shot blocks along are better than 9 entire SEC teams. His 93 blocks alone are bested only by these other SEC schools: LSU (110) and Arkansas (95). His teammates call him “Swat”.
