DirecTV & WAPT working out issues November 5, 2009

Recently, I got my first look at DirecTV’s new HD broadcast of my local ABC affiliate, WAPT. I watched “V”. Great show, by the way.

But the broadcast had a problem that drove me nuts. You computer gamers might follow me here – the broadcast’s frame rate was poor. Scenes with little movement looked OK. But scenes with more movement looked more choppy. It was just like a PC video game where the video card doesn’t have enough horsepower to support the game.

Previous experience with WAPT tells me they take viewer feedback very seriously. So I visited their website and clicked on the contact link to complain.

Minutes later, I received this response.

Yes we know. Direct is working on fixing the problem. It is driving us all nuts.

Well its good to know 1) its a real problem, and 2) somebody is working on it. I’d been afraid this was someone’s new bandwidth-saving technique that we’d be told to live with.

You took away ESPN Classic. Your idiot service rep lied, telling me ESPN forced you to package it with your $13/month out-of-network regional Fox Sports Network channels. What a load of crap.

I paid for ESPN Classic. I also paid for Vs which you also took away recently.

I want my ESPN Classic back.

Sources at shanecrowe.org have discovered that DirecTV does indeed offer the ESPN Gameplan on a weekly basis – but only if you order it on gameday morning. The cost is $21.95 plus a $5 telephone order fee for those like me who refuse to pay AT&T for telephone service which only a satellite TV receiver would ever use.

I bought your HD receiver back when you first came out with HD channels. You didn’t tell me that as soon as you came out with newer HD channels that I’d have to buy a newer HD receiver. But that’s OK – not.

So I bought your new receiver. And had it replaced 3 months later because the quality sucked so bad it quit receiving HD channels. Upon calling for a replacement, you told me you didn’t make that model anymore and that the newer model didn’t have an off-air receiver, leaving me to my own devices to get local channels in HD.

But your crack staff scrambled and sent me a refurb of my “obsolete” receiver which was the last one you made that can pick up locally broadcast HD channels. Good for them.

Yeah, well, so that replacement for the HD receiver I shouldn’t have had to repurchase quit working just a few weeks later. So I called for another replacement and again was told you’d rather replace it with a unit incapable of receiving my local HD channels. Tell me, why do I pay you guys money?

Anyone out there in Internet land have positive experiences with Dishnetwork HD? I’d like to hear it. These DirecTV guys apparently care nothing about keeping me.
