I’m letting the “shanecrowe.org” domain name expire. Google is powerful enough to let people find me if they want, so I figure I don’t need to pay for shanecrowe.org anymore. Sometime early this year (hey, its already 2009), shanecrowe.org will get parked on some spam page after I decline to renew it.
You might have already notice shanecrowe.org currently redirects you to http://mshanecrowe.wordpress.com/
That will be where you can find this blog after the shanecrowe.org name gets adopted by some spam house.
Avoid Kohls’ email list December 28, 2008

There are few retailers that I want email from – Best Buy, Deep Discount DVD, etc. These stores send me promotional stuff sparingly. Most importantly, they don’t abuse the hallowed privilege of sending me email.
Kohls hadn’t been a regular, or irregular, Internet destination of mine. But while Christmas shopping, I surfed over there to see some things and decided to get on their email list. Because I like Kohls. And I like sales at Kohls even more.
So Kohls proceded to email me.
Daily. Bzzzt! Unsubscribe, you go!
But they didn’t stop. Its been a couple months now and I’ve unsubscribed a couple times in that period. And they keep coming. Daily.
Why, Khols? You’ve descended to the level of full-fledged, unapologetic spammer. I’m disappointed.Your emails to me are now banished to the spam filter forever.

No cell phone conracts? Not so fast! July 31, 2008

There’s a lot of jubilation today over a California state court ruling that says it is illegal (in California) for cell phone companies to charge a fee for early contract termination. Now I like sticking it to the man as much as the next guy.
Call me crazy, but I think cell phone contract terms are a great idea. It is precisely those terms which so many people complain about that are the reason all of us can buy cell phones at reasonable prices. The AT&T’s of the world can get away with charging $199 instead of $599 for an iPhone because they know they’ve got your business locked up for a couple years. Take away that “gotcha”, and get ready to pay $599 or thereabouts for your iPhones. Same goes for more modest phones – get ready for $200 instead of free.
Full disclosure – I have a Motorola Razr. I’d much like to have a Blackberry or iPhone with no data plan. A data plan is like a extra cell phone bill. No thanks. Give me a gadget with wi-fi and I’ll simply enjoy it around my home, office, and endless hotspots. (BTW, it appears zero iPhones and exactly 2 models of Blackberry are are wi-fi capable and available sans data plan.)
Speed up Firefox June 30, 2008

If you’ve got broadband internet, making the following changes to Firefox seems to dramatically speed up the web surfing experience:
In the address bar, type “about:config” and hit return. Don’t type the ” marks and make sure you use a semi-colon and not a dot. This brings up a big list of firefox options. Scroll down to these settings, right-click to make the following changes:
- network.http.pipelining = true
- network.http.proxy.pipelining = true
- network.http.pipelining.maxrequests = 30
Finally, right-click anywhere there and select “new” to create a new option. Enter “nglayout.initialpaint.delay”, click OK, enter a value of 0, and click OK again.
These changes will allow firefox to do certain things in parallel instead of sequentially. If you’re on broadband internet, you’ve got bandwidth for this.
Restart firefox. You should see that is runs substantially faster.

WordPress, which hosts this blog, provides a slew of stats. Here are the 3 most-read posts on this blog.
Hacking Guitar Hero: 452 views – a post showing how to make a Playstation3 GHIII guitar work on the PC version of GHIII.
Joe Lee Dunn surfaces: 294 views – an update on the former Mississippi State football defensive coordinator who coached that defense to a #1 national ranking.
Sandestin, FL Day 2: Manta Ray and Sea Turtle day: 290 views – the story of saving a sea turtle during last year’s vacation to Sandestin, FL. But I think google & the general public were more interested in the words “Diego” and “sea turtle” than my vacation.

After sticking it to the man, “the man” is now dazed and confused.
I got an email saying my AT&T ebill was ready for viewing and payment.
Can’t login to the AT&T billing website. Says I need a PIN which is conveniently located on my paper bill. You know, that paper bill that they don’t send me because I’m on e-billing.
AT&T tells me e-billing isn’t available for DSL Direct (DSL sans phone service). Looks like their billing department isn’t aware of this.
If they ever send me a bill, I’ll pay it. If they want to bill me through a website which they won’t grant me access to, I suppose I’ll wait and see what happens.

Low and behold, the Bellsouth DSL service webpage says, “FastAccess DSL without a voice line is available at several speeds and price plans for qualifying customers. Call 800-626-9149 to order.” A click of the link there and I see…
FastAccess DSL without a voice line is available at several speeds and
price plans for qualifying customers. Call 800-626-9149 to order.
FastAccess DSL Direct 768K: 19.95 per month
FastAccess DSL Direct 1.5M: 37.95 per month
FastAccess DSL Direct 3.0M: 42.95 per month
FastAccess DSL Direct 6.0M: 47.95 per month
I called and got signed up. But not before a long hold time and a fire-and-brimstone sales pitch about how my Directv wasn’t going to work without a phone line (it will). Anyway, I got it.
Wow. No more overpriced decades old dial tone service that I haven’t needed in several years. My grandmother can probably remember the day they got phone service. I will remember the day I got rid of it.

The internet is a great thing. Communication service companies – AT&T, Comcast, etc – are not.
AT&T & Comcast both tout high speed internet service for roughly $30. Yeah, try getting it for that. Oh wait, you have to buy antiquated dial tone service or antiquated cable TV service (I still can’t fathom that the majority of Comcast channels around here aren’t up to 1990’s standard-definition satellite quality) to go with that.
Fortunately there’s a report out that says AT&T, under some FCC mandate, is being forced to sell “naked DSL” (DSL without dial tone/voice service) for 30 months. The price is allegedly $29 for 3Mbbs down and 1.5Mbps up. But AT&T doesn’t advertise this service, nor will they volunteer the information over the phone.
Sign me up. Please. Apparently, its a hush-hush deal. You have to talk to the right people and say the right code words to get it. I’ve been working on this for a day now and I’ll post an update when I’m successful. I’ll take their naked DSL for 30 months. After 30 months, they’ll allegedly force everybody back to bundled DSL+dial tone service.
Hopefully by then, Sprint’s Xohm (wimax) service will be out. Unlike today’s cellular data service which is data hacked into a voice network, Xohm is built from the ground up to carry data. In a nutshell, that service will work similar to wi-fi, only its all setup by Sprint instead of you and the coverage should be as ubiquitous as cell phone coverage. And it should work with any old internet hardware and software. No more hassles getting your gadgets from your one service provider and no more succumbing to asinine ala carte subscription fees for individual things like sending pictures, text messages, or checking weather radar. Want to use it in conjunction with a bonafide wi-fi router for all the devices in your house? Knock yourself out. Want to make voice calls with it? Go sign up for Skype (or Sprint’s surely-to-be-offered voice-over-internet product). Like I said, think wifi with cellular-like coverage.
Is buying from Sprint “sticking it to the man”? Even if you can finally get a one-size-fits-all, device-agnostic, use-as-many-gadgets-as-you-want, no-bullshit wireless internet service at a naked DSL-like price point? A service like that from a company not named AT&T that allows me to flip my middle finger at the local phone and cable company? Yeah, that’s sticking it to the man.
