Here we are on week 1 of the 2008 college football season and WJTV is not carrying the Raycom broadcast of Florida-Hawaii. Unthinkable.
Did WJTV forget? Do they favor tennis over football? Or have they declined to participate in Raycom’s inaugural season of broadcasting in HD?
I’d bet on the latter, as the Jackson, MS TV stations are being dragged into the current century kicking and screaming.
UPDATE: Sources say my guess was correct. WJTV has chosen not to pay for HD upgrades needed to carry Raycom since this is Raycom’s last year to carry SEC football. Next year ESPN picks up where Raycom left off. No word on what WJTV will do or not do with ESPN’s regional (not ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN Classic) broadcasts.

It is only Wednesday and its been a great week already.
The Rankin County Sherriff’s office caught the perps who committed violent crimes in broad daylight right next to my gym. They committed armed robbery, aggravated assault (holding a gun to someone’s head and threatening rape), and fired a shot through an atrium window.
Eugene Palmer, 23, of Clinton and Shequita Weathersby, 19, of Magee are charged with armed robbery and being held at the Rankin County Detention Center without bond, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
A second woman, who has not been identified, is jailed in Memphis and is awaiting extradition back to Mississippi, said Sheriff Ronnie Pennington.
In lighter news, restaurant patrons in Ridgeland will be breathing easier within 30 days. Ridgeland aldermen approved a smoking ban in public places, including restaurants and bars. That is glorious news. Ridgeland has the only good sports bar & grills around here, in Buffalo Wild Wings and Alumni House. I’m thrilled that I can safely and comfortably enjoy those places now.
Finally at long last, decades of Downtown Jackson revitalization talk is rolling forward. In recent years, Farish Street and a nearby train station have been rebuilt. But Farish Street currently looks like Beale Street in Memphis, minus businesses and people. Keep building it and they will come, I tell ya.

Next up, a brand new high rise is in the works near One Jackson Place. Also King Edward Hotel has been cleaned out and given a start date for rennovation. And now that King Edward is moving foward, Mayor Frank Melton has his sites on the abandoned building next door that was a cattle train/slaughter house long ago, and more recently housed the famed Iron Horse Grill mexican restaurant. Go Frank!
Despite all of Frank’s many criticisms, I think he’s doing a great job rebuilding Jackson. The King Edward has been vacant for longer than it was occupied over 60 years ago. Frank finally brought progress when he made a credible threat to demolish the place if something wasn’t done to rebuild the place.
The Clarion Ledger has a nice photo gallery of what the King Edward looks like today.
