Right behind Titanic, the other James Cameron movie from this decade. Amazing. The guy makes 2 movies in 10 years and they become the #1 and #2 highest grossing movies ever.

Seriously, Avatar rocks. Go see it. In 3D.

“Avatar” best movie since Star Wars December 25, 2009

The Dow Jones Industrial Average had just rebounded from a deep recession. The economy still sucked and the DJIA was still no higher than it was more than 10 years prior. Energy prices were sky high. Americans were in economic despair and conserving things, especially energy, like they had not in a least a generation or more.

Then along comes a fantasy tale of good-vs-evil presented in a feel-good movie with truly revolutionary cinematic technology that wowed audiences like they hadn’t been wowed in decades. The movie provided audiences with a couple hours of much needed escapism and captivated the nation.

The movie raised the bar for film-making and its makers launched new companies which changed film-making forever.

1977 or 2009?

Avatar is Star Wars, reborn – economically, emotionally, and technically.  Not reborn like The Phantom Menace was merely another part of the Star Wars franchise created after a 16 year pause. I mean reborn like re-introducing a new bar to which future movies will hope to achieve for the next generation of movie-goers.

Avatar freaking rocks. The storyline is great. The movie technology is just jaw-dropping. You’ve got to go see this in 3D. It was made for 3D, not just as a novelty as such movies have been sparingly made over the years. But as a way to legitimately present a movie. It is absolutely incredible.

I’ve not felt like this since 1977. And boy was it great to be 7 years old again if only for 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Warner has a good thing going to make amends with everyboyd who purchased no defunct HD-DVD formatted Warner Bros movie titles. For $4.95 plus shipping, you can trade your Warner HD-DVD movies in for a Bluray version.

Head over to Red2Blu to take advantage of this.

I watched X-Files: I Want To Believe on Saturday. If you’re an X-Files fan, you’ll definitely like this one. If you’re a casual X-Files fan, I still think you’ll like it.

I though the movie might flop if they were going to stretch the ongoing alien story yet again. But the latest X-Files movie is quite a bit more terrestrial than that.

I won’t spoil the story here, as I hate it when movie reviews do that. I’ll just say X-Files: I Want To Believe is actually a fairly serious drama. Chris Carters spares us from outlandish, if entertaining, alien stories and brings us a fairly serious drama about faith and redemption.

The movie was much deeper than I expected. It won’t get mentioned at oscar parties, but I came away impressed.

Four out of five stars.

John Williams might be the most underrated pop culture icon in America. Who’s John Williams? He composed and conducted the music behind seemingly most of the mega blockbuster movies of the last 4 decades – Star Wars (all of them), Indiana Jones (again, all of them), Jaws, Jurassic Park, E.T., Superman, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, etc.

Here’s a quite entertaining tribute to John Williams.

Russia doesn’t like the new Indiana Jones movie. They say it paints communism in a bad light. Therefore the Russian Communist Party is calling for the movie to be banned in Russia.

I rewatched Full Metal Jacket last night. This flick never gets old. Great movie.

R. Lee Ermey who played Sergeant Hartman wasn’t originally cast in the film. Ermey was hired as a military consultant. But Ermey wanted the role and was set on proving his worth for it. Between takes, Ermey launched his patented drill sergeant tirades to demonstrate how Sgt Hartman should be played. Director Stanley Kubrick recognized that none was better for the part than Ermey. And Ermey won his role. Most, if not all, of Sgt Hartman’s intense drill instructor tirades are ad-libed by Ermey.
