Jerious Norwood has his best game in NFL week 17. Highlights are here.

Man, that boy can scat. Two things to note here – 1) I was as surprised as Jerious probably was when he was tackled from behind on his 92 yard kickoff return, and 2) on the very next play they ran a wildcat wrinkle I’d not seen before. There’s Jerious taking a direct snap while standing right beside him also ready to take a diret snap was the QB who also had his hands out ready for the snap. Anyway the result – 2 plays, all-Norwood, 100 yards, touchdown.

By the way, on one of his touchdown runs, his former Mississippi State teammate Quinton Culberson was a Rams linebacker who came up with air after trying to tackle Norwood.

Washington Redskin tight end Chris Cooley has a blog. Its a pretty good one too. It is interesting and entertaining to see an NFL player communicate as candidly as he does on his blog.

2008 NFL rule changes April 2, 2008

The NFL has adopted the following rule changes:

  • The force-out rule was eliminated, meaning a player who catches a ball must have both feet (or another body part) in bounds.
  • Teams winning the coin toss now can defer a decision until the second half. In college, teams choose to get the ball to start the second half 97 percent of the time, said Mike Pereira, the NFL’s head of officiating. But “after talking to a number of NFL coaches, many prefer to start on offense,” said Titans coach Jeff Fisher, co-chairman of the competition committee.
  • Instant replay was expanded to include review of field goals (except those above either upright that don’t touch anything).
  • Snaps untouched by a player in position to receive a hand-to-hand snap will no longer be a false start, and either team may recover and advance the ball.
  • Muffed illegal forward handoffs will be treated as fumbles, and no longer as incomplete forward passes.
  • Incidental grasp and release of the facemask, which was a five-yard penalty, will no longer be penalized. The 15-yard penalty remains intact for twisting, turning or pulling the mask.

I seriously don’t like eliminating the rule that gave a receiver possession if it appeared he would have landed in bounds if not for being pushed out of bounds. The biggest impact here is going to be in the endzone. Say goodbye to the fade patter when the quarterback throws it high towards the out of bounds mark and the receiver out-jumps the DB for the ball. Now the DB is going to stand there, allow the catch to happen, and push the receiver out of bounds before the receiver can land in bounds.

And I wonder how the NFL is going to handle a DB carrying a receiver out of bounds.

I like the other changes, especially getting rid of the incidental facemask penatly. This is the NFL. Players can handle slight pulls of the facemask.

Brett Favre finally retires. He has made Mississippi proud. Favre is surely a first-ballot NFL Hall of Famer.

Here are my favorite Brett Favre facts:

  • He played in the NFL 17 years and did not miss a single game. Once becoming a starter, he started every game, regular season and playoffs, for the rest of his long career.
  • The day after his father died, he turned in a career-best game with 4 touchdowns and 399 yards passing.
  • Most TD passes in the NFL: 442
  • Most yards passing in the NFL: 61,655
  • Most wins for a NFL QB: 160

What a day. The Chargers backups sans LT and Philip Rivers took care of the might Colts. And the Giants depleted secondary consisting of ex-practice squad players shut down the NFL’s second best offense in the Cowboys. Ouch.

Romo’s head wasn’t in the game. He grounded the ball from the pocket. He scrambled and took sacks (instead of throwing it away). He overthrew all of his deep passes. It was an awful time for him to turn in his 2nd-worst game of the season.

After suffering a high ankle sprain 2 weeks ago, all indications are Terrell Owens will play Sunday when the Cowboys open their playoff season against New York.
