The same sources that broke the Coach O firing are reporting that an agreement between Houston Nutt and Ole Miss is nearly finalized for 5 years at $9.5 million. The fifth year would reportedly be implmented as an auto-rollover once the 1st year has played out (MS state law prohibits contracts over 4 years).

This is the most believable of all the rumors I’ve heard. With its unjustified firing of David Cutcliffe and its firing of Ed Orgeron just 3 weeks after endorsing his future, Ole Miss has a terrible reputation in coaching circles. Ole Miss’s only option, in my opinion, is to hire damaged goods that still has some coaching potential.

Houston Nutt fits that mold. He leaves Arkansas with trouble on and off the field in his last year. But the man can coach and his offenses are inventive. That fits the bill for Ole Miss.

My only surprise here would be that Ole Miss could afford to pay Houston Nutt twice what Orgeron was making, all while paying off a buyout of Orgeron’s contract.
