Hacking Guitar Hero February 5, 2008

Just got done with a little co-op mode jam session using my Playstation3 Guitar Hero guitar with the PC version of Guitar Hero, and of course the guitar made for the PC version. Here’s how that’s done. I picked this tip from a PS3 forum.
1. Go here, download, and install the PS3 Sixaxis driver for the PC. This will make the PS3 controller act like a generic USB game controller.
. Ignore the filter driver for now.
. Unpack ps3sixaxis_en.exe
. Plug the SIXAXIS into your PC.
. Run ps3sixaxis_en.exe once.
. Push the PS button on the SIXAXIS once if it doesn’t see it straight away.
2. Go into Guitar Hero no the PC and write down what all the keyboard controls are (eg: yellow is the X key). Yes, for some reason they made it so GH3 can be played through a computer keyboard.
3. Now download and run this little joy2key shareware program which will convert the “generic game controller” (PS3 guitar) to the keyboard keys defined in Step 2.
Here’s what you’ll need to know to run joy2key. The PS3 guitar and “generic game controller” are related to each other as follows:
POV 1 UP /DOWN = Strum
button 1 => Square / Yellow
button 2 => X / Green
button 3 => O / Red
button 4 => Triangle / Blue
button 5 => L1 / Orange
Bouton 9 => Select
Now, use joy2key to map “button 1″, “button 2″, etc. to their respective keyboard keys from step 2. For example, if you wrote down that yellow = X on the keyboard, use joy2key to map “button 1″ to X.
Wash, rinse repeat.
I don’t know how the Wammy bar gets mapped into this. Would be nice to know which generic game controller button was the wammy bar.
Anyway, this is what I did and it seems to work.

About that PS3 hard drive space January 12, 2008

So I bought the 40GB model. I figured I wouldn’t need much disk space. I’m not all that into media servers and such.
But I visited the Playstation Store (via the PS3). Free HD movie trailers were available for download. So its downloading the Sweeny Todd trailer now….all 30GB of it. Ouch.
CORRECTION: I misread. It said I had 30GB of free space (hmm….I have a 40GB PS3 and have only played one game…I’ll bet the PS3 operating system must be 10GB). The Sweeney Todd trailer only took up 1GB .
Playstation 3 quirks January 11, 2008

I’m the proud owner of a new Playstation 3. It is positively the funnest Blu-ray player a person can own. I’ll only get to play it on redeye nights, but what the heck.

Sadly, here are quirks PS3 owners or would-be owners might want to know about.
The PS3 has been manufactured in 4 different models – 20GB (discountined), 40GB, 60GB (almost discontinued), and 80GB. Obviously, the primary differences are the hard drives. The 40GB model is the only model that can’t play Playstation 2 games. The 20GB and 60GB models have hardware support for PS2 games while the 80GB model has only software emulation to support PS2 games.
And now for the potentially frustrating part. The PS3 has a built-in media server which can be used to transfer music and videos between your PS3 and your computer(s). Cool. Well, almost. If you have one of the world’s most popular wi-fi routers form Linksys, then the PS3 media server will crash your wi-fi (the PS3 works fine with other brands of routers – WAKE UP, LINKSYS!!) Everything on your network will periodically loose connectivity or not connect at all due to techno-babble I won’t get into details about. To connect your PS3 to you home Linksys-based wi-fi network, you must:
1) Setup your PS3 with a static IP address.
2) In your router, setup the PS3′s static address for DMZ.
2) Turn off upnp in your router.
4) Turn off your PS3′s media server.
Hope that made sense. If not, just google it.
Why would you want to put your PS3 on your network? Because online gameplay is free from Sony! Woo-hoo! Take that, Xbox Live! You have not played video games until you’ve played against human opponents.
