In case anyone is wondering, the storms and tornadoes that swept Central Mississippi on Friday hit us harder than Hurrican Katrina did. More trees are down. More houses are destroyed. The shingles on my house which stood up to Katrina didn’t survive the stronger gusts from Friday’s storm.
More power lines are down. Its been out since Friday. We’re still in the dark. The forecast for electricity is for sometime between Monday and Wednesday.
At least there aren’t lines at every gas station.
Georgia Dome shaken by tornado March 15, 2008

A tornado struck downtown Atlanta during last night’s Mississippi State – Alabama SEC tournament basketball game. The tornado occurred during overtime. Overtime happened because Alabama’s Mykal Riley hit a fall-away buzzer-beater circus 3-point shot to send the game into overtime. If that hadn’t happened, there might have been thousands of people outside the GA Dome when the tornado struck.
The Georgia Dome apparently did not take a direct hit. But, as I watched the game on live TV, the Georgia Dome’s cable-strung canvas rooftop rippled, shook, and caused catwalks, lights, and the scoreboard to sway above thousands of people inside the Dome.
Here’s an article on the structure. The canvas roof weighs just 68 pounds.
I’m not sure putting a canvas roof over a football stadium is a real good idea, especially if scoreboards and things are going to sway in the wind.

This Lufthansa jet was turned just about sideways by a 150+ mph wind while trying to land. The plane actually drags a wing tip on the ground before aborting the landing.
In other news, Lufthansa tried to land in a 150+ mph cross wind.
